Extended Pilot with Enhancements
Originally introduced as a three-year experiment in 2020, the Agri-Food Pilot has been extended until May 14, 2025, as of May 2023. To further enhance accessibility for eligible candidates, two noteworthy modifications have been introduced in 2023.
1. Family Members’ Eligibility
Firstly, family members of Agri-Food Pilot applicants are now eligible to apply for Canadian open work permits, providing additional opportunities for familial inclusion and support.
2. Union Reference Letters
Secondly, Canadian immigration authorities will now accept union reference letters in place of employer reference letters, streamlining the documentation process for applicants to validate their work experience.
Eligibility Criteria
Individuals, whether within Canada or abroad, can apply for permanent residency under the Agri-Food Pilot if they meet the following criteria:
Work Experience: Accumulate at least one year of cumulative, non-seasonal, full-time experience in the last three years within eligible agri-food occupations, gained through a minimum 12-month LMIA-based work permit.
- Job Offer: Secure a full-time, permanent, non-seasonal position in a qualifying occupation within the eligible agri-food industries.
- Education: Possess a Canadian high school diploma or its equivalent education assessment.
- Settlement Funds: Demonstrate adequate settlement funds to support oneself and family members in Canada, with an exemption for those currently employed under a work permit in the country.
- Language Proficiency: Attain a minimum language proficiency (English or French) of Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) Level 4.
Acceptable Proofs of Work Experience
Eligible applicants can provide various proofs of work experience, including an employer or union reference letter, a letter of employment, T4 forms, or paystubs.
Occupations Eligible for the Agri-Food Pilot
The Agri-Food Pilot encompasses occupations in meat product manufacturing, greenhouse, and floriculture production, as well as animal production (excluding aquaculture). From butchers to livestock laborers, the eligible occupations cater to diverse roles within these industries.
