Canada has conducted a special Express Entry draw targeting candidates with French language proficiency. This draw resulted in 1,800 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) being issued to applicants who met the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 400 points. This was a significant decrease from the previous French language proficiency draw on July 8, 2024, which required a minimum CRS score of 420 and saw 3,200 ITAs issued.

Overview of Recent Draws

The July 18 draw was part of Canada’s ongoing efforts to promote linguistic diversity and support the integration of French-speaking immigrants into various provinces outside Quebec. This specific draw follows a series of recent invitations, including a Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw held on July 17, 2024. The CEC draw was notable for issuing 6,300 ITAs with a minimum CRS score of 515, reflecting the competitive nature of this immigration pathway

Express Entry System and Category-Based Draws

The Express Entry system remains Canada’s most popular and efficient pathway for skilled immigrants to obtain permanent residency. The system ranks candidates based on their CRS scores, which consider factors such as age, education, work experience, and language proficiency in English and French. The recent shift to category-based draws, such as those focusing on French language proficiency, healthcare, and STEM occupations, aims to address specific labor market needs and promote balanced demographic growth across Canada

Details of the July 18 Draw

The July 18, 2024, draw, marking the 27th round of invitations for the year and the 305th overall since the Express Entry system’s inception, was particularly notable for its lower CRS cut-off score. This reduction from the previous draw’s cut-off of 420 points to 400 points enabled more candidates with French language skills to receive ITAs. The tie-breaking rule was applied to profiles submitted before March 8, 2024, at 3:51 pm EST, ensuring fair selection among candidates with the minimum score

Canada’s Immigration Goals for 2024

Canada is set to surpass its ambitious immigration target of 465,000 new permanent residents for 2023, aiming for an even higher goal of 485,000 in 2024. These targets are part of the government’s broader strategy to support economic growth and address demographic challenges, including an aging population and labor shortages in various sectors

Opportunities for Employers

Employers across Canada are encouraged to utilize the Express Entry system and other immigration pathways to recruit skilled foreign workers. Securing a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or leveraging provincial nomination programs (PNPs) can help employers retain these workers long-term. Specialized services, such as those offered by immigration firms, provide valuable support in navigating the complex immigration landscape and meeting recruitment needs

Canada’s commitment to promoting bilingualism and supporting French-speaking communities outside Quebec is evident in the focus on French language proficiency. It is common for French-speaking newcomers to settle in provinces like New Brunswick and parts of Ontario, contributing to the cultural and linguistic diversity of these areas.
