1 Mins read

The new Canada open work permit program for H1B visa holders in the United States will open on July 16, 2023. It allows them to work for any employer in Canada and will accept applications for one year or until 10,000 applicants have been reached. The permit duration is up to 3 years and family members can accompany the primary applicants.

There is no specific permanent residency pathway for these open work permit holders, but gaining 1 year of Canadian experience will benefit their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in Express Entry. They may qualify under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) after gaining one year of experience in Canada.

There are a total of 24 STEM occupations being targeted by Express Entry draws in 2023. The program was announced to attract talent to Canada and more details will be provided by IRCC closer to the opening date.

New Open Work Permit For US H1B Visa Holders

There are approximately 600,000 H1B visa holders in the US working for 50,000 employers. The number of available permits (10,000) is considered insufficient and it is expected to be filled quickly after the program launches.

IRCC is also working on another innovation stream under the International Mobility Program (IMP) that aims to bring talented workers to Canada to support innovative businesses.
