Current Work Regulations for International Students

Last year, then-Immigration Minister Sean Fraser made a significant move by lifting the 20-hour-per-week cap on the off-campus work hours for eligible post-secondary international students. This decision aimed to address the economic needs of both students and the growing demand for skilled workers in Canada.

Temporary Lift Coming to an End

While the temporary lifting of the 20-hour rule has been in effect since November 15, 2022, it is scheduled to conclude on December 31. International students are now expressing their hopes that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will reconsider and make this change a permanent feature of the international study program.

Challenges Faced by International Students

In an interview with CBC, James Casey from the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) highlighted the challenges faced by international students. Rising rents and living costs, coupled with the absence of federal or provincial loans, grants, or housing vouchers, are disproportionately affecting these students. Some have even resorted to using food banks, emphasizing a stark contrast between the experiences of international and Canadian students.

The Plea for Extension

Without an extension of the 20-hour work rule, the situation for international students is expected to worsen, according to Casey. The potential choices between violating policies or affording housing could put them in difficult positions. There are concerns that without a permanent decision, international students might become vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitative labor practices.

Support from Advocacy Groups

The Migrant Workers Alliance for Change (MWAC) has been actively lobbying for the removal of the 20-hour work limit for international students. The group cites several reasons for this, emphasizing the need for fair treatment, considering factors like average work shifts, economic realities, existing precedents, and the importance of self-determination and flexibility in the academic cycle.

International Students’ Work Options

The article also provides information on the current work options available to international students, including on-campus and off-campus work, study programs with work requirements, and opportunities through the International Experience Canada.

As the temporary lift of the 20-hour rule approaches its end, international students in Canada are rallying for a more permanent solution to support their financial needs. The advocacy emphasizes the economic contributions of international students and the potential benefits to Canada’s workforce. The decision rests with IRCC, and the outcome will significantly impact the lives of these students pursuing education in the country.
