New Visa Requirements for Mexican Citizens in Canada

1 Mins read

In response to a surge in asylum claims from Mexico, Canada has reinstated visa requirements for Mexican nationals visiting the country. This change, effective as of February 29, 2024, impacts all Mexican citizens who previously held an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. Visa Requirements

All Mexican citizens are now required to obtain a visitor visa to enter Canada unless they meet specific criteria:

  • Entering Canada by air or flying to Canada for transit
  • Staying for short-term visits (typically up to six months)
  • Holding a Canadian visitor visa (or other temporary resident visa*) in the past 10 years or a valid United States nonimmigrant visa at the time of application and travel

Mexican travelers who had an eTA before 11:30 pm EST on February 29th, 2024, will need to apply for a new permit as their existing eTA will be canceled.

Impact on Current Visitors in Canada

Visitors already in Canada without study or work permits will be allowed to stay for their approved duration, but their eTAs will be canceled. If they plan to re-enter Canada after leaving, they must apply for a visitor visa or a new eTA if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Impact on Mexicans with Work or Study Permits in Canada

Mexican citizens in Canada on study or work permits will retain their existing eTAs and can continue traveling with them if valid. When applying for new work or study permits, they will automatically receive a visa or eTA based on eligibility upon approval.

Reactivation of Canceled eTAs

Mexicans with valid study or work permits at the time of the change whose eTAs were canceled may be eligible to reactivate them. To check eligibility, individuals can submit a web form request to Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) with the code “EMVR2024” included.

It is important to note that an eTA is only valid for air travel. Travelers planning to enter Canada by car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ships) will require a valid visitor visa.
