Canada’s Immigration Policy Overhaul

In Canada, the government has introduced significant changes affecting international students. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has doubled immigration fees, alongside alterations in work permits. Effective January 1, 2024, students must demonstrate a higher financial capacity, with the required amount increased from $10,000 to $20,635. Additionally, the full-time work provision during studies, initially valid until December 31, 2023, has been extended until April 30, 2024.

The termination of the 18-month work permit rule in January impacts those whose permits expire by December 31, 2023. However, individuals in this category remain eligible to apply for an 18-month work permit. Notably, certain online study components will still count towards eligibility for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) until September 2024.

Australia’s Stricter Visa Policies

Australia, grappling with immigration challenges, has announced a plan to reduce its annual visa intake to 250,000 by June 2025. This initiative entails tougher visa rules for international students and skilled workers. Notably, visa applicants in ‘Shortage Occupations’ face a more rigorous examination, accompanied by a 20% reduction in salaries. The Family Visa income threshold has also surged from £18,600 to £38,700, urging a reconsideration of the Graduate Visa route to address potential abuse.

UK’s Rigorous Immigration Measures

In response to record-high net migration in 2022, the UK Government has implemented stringent immigration measures. These include an increase in the minimum salary requirement for skilled foreign workers seeking visas to work in the country. The actions extend to restrictions on international students bringing their families to the UK, with exceptions for those enrolled in postgraduate research programs.

Key Highlights of the UK Immigration Plan

Restriction on overseas care workers bringing family dependents.

Mandatory registration with the Care Quality Commission for care firms sponsoring visas.

Earnings threshold increase to £38,700 for skilled worker routes, starting from spring.

Discontinuation of the 20% salary deduction for shortage occupations and a reorganization of the Shortage Occupation List.

Doubling the minimum income requirement for family visas to £38,700, aligning with skilled worker thresholds.

Implementation of stricter rules for students bringing family members to the UK, with a comprehensive review of the graduate route by the Migration Advisory Committee.

Experts emphasize that the changes in immigration policies underscore the lack of opportunities in India, prompting many young individuals to explore opportunities abroad. This perspective sheds light on the broader context driving individuals to seek better prospects beyond their home countries.
